Eye on Earth (EoE) strives to enable the generation, maintenance, sharing and application of environmental, societal and economic data and information to support informed decision-making for sustainable development. In December 2011, Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), through the AGEDI and in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), convened global leaders, innovators and decision-makers to an inaugural EoE Summit.
The 2011 Summit led to the development of the visionary EoE Declaration and its 14 guiding principles, which form the foundation of all EoE work. It was endorsed by 48 countries (16 countries plus 32 European Union member countries).
Special Initiatives:
Eight Special Initiatives (SIs) were also created to form the backbone of the strategy to deliver the Eye on Earth mission. Of the eight SIs, three are Foundational (F) and five are Thematic (T):
The SIs are the engine and driving force behind EoE and a key component of the success of the global movement in filling the data gap to support informed decision making.
The Alliance
The EoE Alliance, which is made of AGEDI, UNEP, the World Resources Institute (WRI) , the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), seeks to continue to build and mobilise global support to advance the overall EoE mission. The Alliance continues to grow and manages the strategic direction and vision of EoE, with the five core organisations possessing a diverse yet complementary set of expertise that will be harnessed to drive the EoE agenda forward.
